Netherlands – Ukraine
The 1988 winners Netherlands will try to start with a win their campaign at the Euro 2020 on June 13. That’s when the Dutch side will face Ukraine in Amsterdam in its first match in the competition group stage. Let’s dive into this game at the Johan Cruijff Arena in our best soccer tips for today. Are you ready?
In the company of Ukraine, Austria, and North Macedonia, the Netherlands are the considerable favorite to win the group. Frank de Boer’s team has a fearsome reputation, and Oranje is consistently among the major contenders in every big competition they participate in. This time it’s no different.
How did the Netherlands do during the qualifying campaign for Euro 2020? Well, they did well enough to finish second after Germany and reach the competition. Oranje finished the campaign with 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss, with their only defeat coming against Germany on home soil.
In the World Cup qualifying campaign, De Boer’s boys had a rough start because they were beaten in their first game against Turkey. The players and the head coach had to deal with a lot of criticism after the loss, but they got themselves together and answered the critics with two consecutive wins against Latvia and Gibraltar. In these two matches, Oranje scored nine goals and didn’t concede any. The level of the opposition was obviously not very high, though.
Two days ago, the Netherlands participated in their first friendly game before the Euro 2020. De Boer’s boys faced Scotland and surprisingly didn’t win – the game ended 2-2. We said “surprisingly” because the Dutch side was obviously the favorite here. We should not underestimate Scotland, though – they are among the teams which qualified for the European Championship as well.
Olympique Lyonnais’ Memphis Depay was the hero for Oranje against the Scottish side. Depay, who is heavily linked with a possible move to Barcelona this summer, scored both goals for the Netherlands against the Tartan Army. Gini Wijnaldum provided one of the assists, and most likely, he’s going to be his teammate at Barca next season.
In this game, Frank de Boer used a traditional 3-5-2- formation. He put De Jong, De Roon and Wijnaldum in midfield while Depay and Weghorst led the attack. Wijndal and Dumfries played on the two flanks. It remains to be seen if he’s going to stick with this formation during the tournament, too.
Virgil van Dijk is arguably the significant absentee in the Netherland’s squad. The Liverpool star missed almost the entire last season with an ACL injury, and he didn’t recover in time for the European Championship. Van Dijk is certainly a player who you can’t replace, but at the same time, players like De Ligt and De Vrij must try their best to do it. Oranje’s success at the Euro depends on this as well.
Frenkie De Jong is expected to be one of the leading players in Frank de Boer’s team. De Jong is a young midfielder who is progressing very well since his move to Barcelona. The former Ajax man had an excellent last season in Barca and helped the team win the Copa del Rey. De Jong is going to be the man responsible for most of the dynamic in the midfield area. He can attack very well, but he’s also a hard worker in defense. A great player, indeed.
Ukraine made headlines with their campaign in the European qualifiers as they left Portugal’s talented squad behind them in their group. It seems the head coach Andriy Shevchenko is doing some excellent work, so we can’t forget to mention him. Shevchenko is one of the biggest legends in the history of Ukrainian football, and now he’s ready to leave his mark as a coach, too.
At this moment, the former AC Milan striker has some interesting team at his disposal. Dynamo Kyiv’s Viktor Tsygankov is one of the players who deserve to be mentioned. Just 23-years old, Tsygankov is a creative and very technical midfielder who knows how to dominate games. The European Championship is another chance for him to impress the biggest clubs and possibly move to a more significant league this summer. That’s an excellent opportunity for him.
Meanwhile, Gent’s striker Roman Yaremchuk continues to progress, and he’s very close to moving to a bigger league as well. Last season Yaremchuk scored 20 league goals for Gent in the Belgian First Division A. He’s also aware that his performances at the Euro 2020 could secure him a dream move to a top European league. Players like Tsygankov and Yaremchuk will be very motivated to prove their worth and show why they are regarded stars in their home country.
Ukraine didn’t start in the best way possible in the World Cup qualifiers as they made three consecutive 1-1 draw against France, Finland, and Kazakhstan. Winning a point against the world champions was pretty great, but it was disappointing that Ukraine won just two points against Finland and Kazakhstan afterward. The head coach Andriy Shevchenko admitted that he was not happy with his team’s performance. Ukraine will be looking to improve this summer, although they made a 1-1 draw in their last game as well – a friendly match against Bahrein.
Shakhtar Donetsk’s center-back, Serhiy Kryvtsov, is expected to be one of the leaders in Ukraine’s team at the Euro. The 30-years old defender is crucial for the way Ukraine defends. He has a vast experience, while his height of 186 cm helps him win a lot of aerial duels.
That’s our best soccer tips for today for the Euro 2020 game between the Netherlands and Ukraine in Group C of the competition. Oranje are the team to beat here, but we don’t think Ukraine is a team you should write off easily – they have the quality to hurt any team they face. It’s going to be a pretty good match between these two sides, and we expect to see some goals as well.
